A non-notary witness is simply someone who observes the signing of a document. Their role is often to attest that the signer did indeed sign the document and appeared to be of sound mind and acting freely. In some cases, like wills, they might also be attesting to other specific facts.
Important Note: The specific requirements for witnesses vary significantly by state and the type of document. It's always best to consult with legal counsel or refer to the specific laws of your jurisdiction to determine the exact witnessing requirements for any particular document.

A notarial protest is a formal document issued by a notary public when a negotiable instrument, like a check, is not honored for payment. While often related to unpaid debts, a protest can also document the formal refusal to accept a bill of exchange or, in less common instances, record specific facts in maritime or other unique situations. This official record can be crucial for establishing liability when an obligation isn't met.
